After sitting for two weeks in closed garage, today gear selector in my 1994 Silver Cloud III is broke. First it wouldn't go into any gear and no illumination of positions in dash. Applying gas pedal response was neutral. Then 3 lit and engagement felt. Was able to drive car out of garage but wouldn't go into reverse. Apparently stays in 3 regardless of lever position. Now parked won't go into Park but instead 2 is lit. Any ideas please?

You could definitely have an instance where corrosion on the connections at the electric gear selector have come into play. It seems that some cars never develop this issue while others do.

It seems that you have electric supply to the system, but what's getting from the gear selector in the cabin to the gear selector mechanism at the transmission is somehow compromised.

It would be worth checking the connection at the gear selector and giving it a good treatment with something like Caig DeOxIt or similar once you have it apart on both sides of the connection. The addition of some electrically conductive grease on the male contacts before putting it all back together wouldn't hurt, either.

Thank you. Yesterday I removed cup around selector. I thoroughly cleaned PARK terminal point and arm point and power pickoff arc for arm. Also, jumped with wire from arc to PARK point. Still nothing but "2" working. I verified that my jump also made "2" illuminate with an insulator between arm and "2" point. It seems problem is NOT with the Selector electrical switching, but downstream of it, right? Is "2" a default when problem occurs with transmission gear selection????

Having done some wiring tests I now think the reason my transmission selector failed is the computer failed. Apparently the circuit that is closed by the selector contacting one of the six selector positions goes into the computer which outputs some voltage on one or more of thirteen wires that lead into the GM transmission thru a socket with bayonet fastener. Can anyone confirm it works like this. When I put test voltage on each of the six connector pins (one at a time) all thirteen pins to the cable to the transmission show that voltage. Seems like the electronic switching in the computer has failed such that all output pins are switched on permanently.

Can anyone tell me where I can purchase of replacement computer for my 1994 Silver Spur III? What will I have to pay?
