I am negotiating for a series 5 corniche and would like to know the perticular issues these cars might have..
i DO know the top cylinders might be an issue, my 67k mile '97 SL600 had that issue and i did most all of them myself.. not something i would want to do again..
my '81 spur never had any issues.. well, the electronic thing in the distributor was flaky but aside from that it was quite stable mechanically..
SO what do i look for and what might i use as a negotiating tool..

Bill, Welcome to the Forum. Most of the members here have motorcars that are built before the transition of the marque and eventual sale to BMW/VW Cars built using mixed technology has proven to be frustrating and expensive to the new custodians of this era for many reasons; complex electronics with layers of diagnostic protocals, top systems using Mercedes actuator systems, etc.

The RROC Forum has great technical experts that can advise you accordingly. The lack of hands-on ability or not having a qualified service tech in your locale may dictate your decision. thanks for those sites..
RROC won't let me in as i don't currently OWN a rolls or bentley..
from what i gather the corniche 5 was an upgrade of the azure.. softer ride, etc..
azure was/is a convertible version of the continental.. first azure 1995.. thus it should be a pretty solid car.. since the corniche 5 is a facelift of the azure it too should be fairly good and all the bugs corrected..
so if anyone has insight into how reliable a C 5 might be i would like to know.. it IS or should be considered a true crewe made rolls..
there IS a service tech local who works on exotics including clouds to spurs and my Mercedes cars though he refuses to do a head gasket on my S600 V12..

Bill, you are mistaken when you state the RROC won't let you in because you do not own a Rolls-Royce or Bentley. Ownership is NOT a requirement of membership, you need only to have an interest in the cars. John Robison would most likely have the most experience with the model you are interested in. http://www.robisonservice.com/

HOWEVER, checking the RROC site they want $95 just to join.. i don't charge for MY thinkpads forum so i'm mot inclined to pay $95, thus if anyone here has some RR corniche intel they might want to share i would be appreciative..

Clubs have dues and as a benefit of collecting dues there is a great forum for members to share, access to technical people for various models, The Flying Lady Magazine and entry to the club headquarters in PA that is not only a museum but contains historical data, parts, workshops etc.

gosh, if $95 were too much i should not even consider any RR car..

the $95 is not too much IF i end up buying this corniche..
but the more i learn about that particular series and the turbocharged cars the less i really want headaches in my life..
i just would not mind having one that lives up to the supposed tradition of a rolls.. i.e. long trouble free operation..
not a car with a stressed engine due to the turbo or possible headgasket issues or under engineered top mechanisms, etc...
SO when i learn if this particular car has any, some or all of those issues i'll either buy it or pass and just continue to let my SL55 get my derrier from point A to point B..
