Hi,

as a follow on to this post, I'm stuck trying to remove the rear backrest (SWB, 1997 Shadow 2).

I have to use the Series 1 workshop manual, because as I mentioned in a previous post, the applicable body sections in the Shadow II manuals are impossible to find.

I've loosened the armrest bolts and in the trunk the two bolts that are found upper right and upper left.
The backrest as such is quite free to pull out from the bottom (to an extent).

It seems however, that something (when I pull the base of the backrest out it and peer up from the gap I create, it seems like there are 2 thick wire clips - either side of the armrest - see photo) is preventing me moving the backrest up and out. I just can't get the leverage to push/pull the seat vertically.

What am I missing here?!

Thanks as always.

There are 2 long sheet metal screws at the lower corners on the inside of the cabin. Once the bottom seat squab is removed, you will see them

Yup, U got it. If those were there you could not raise the back. I would recommend removing the headrests, giving you more room upwards. Also , if a headrest should puncture the headliner, it's more work and aggravation. I have installed new headliners, yes they are time consuming and old school design.

So I got the seat out. It seems that the seat needs to be pulled out horizontally into the car interior and not so much vertically. The manual is unclear about this.

The brackets I could just about see are these ones - I hope this helps someone avoid frustration!

Thanks for putting up the solution to the problem and pics. It's a useful reference for owners carrying out this work in the future. The accurate subject title "rear seats removal" also makes searching the forum much easier.

Do you happen to have a picture where these brackets hold on to in the car? Seems a bit odd that you would have to move them horizontally...meaning with a very abrupt stop (other words for collision) the back would come loose?
(Sorry, trying to understand the mechanism)

The rear backseat U shaped locating lugs are oriented vertically, which means, once the 2 lower corner screws are removed, along with the armrest fasteners, the seat back is raised vertically until it clears and then pulled forward. So to re-install, the 2 locating lugs slip down into the body.
I think someone bent your locating lugs after being frustrated trying to re-install the back cushion. Maybe?

Interestingly the car has no holes or corresponding slot that might accept the U-shaped loops (see photo).

The loops appeared to be directly underneath the leather covered parcel shelf. I will look at the parcel shelf I removed on Monday to see if there’s a corresponding fastening for the loops.
