My name is Leland Hardy and I am poised to take delivery of a vintage Rolls-Royce, a 1985 Silver Spur (VIN# SCAZN42A8FCX13006) . When I asked an authorized Rolls-Royce dealer, Motorcars of Atlanta, for the color codes for the exterior and interior of the vehicle, they told me that they have no information on the car, nor could they work on the car because it is a "non-Goodwood car." Please explain the implications and meaning of that. As for my personal introduction,. Information about me work to provide personal protective equipment to cities, states, hospitals, corporations, etc. can be found here: www.PPEimporter.com. Join the RROC or call the RR Foundation and they can usually supply data sheets for the warranty period at the time. There is a charge for this info.
Paint code(s) are usually on a plated under the inside of the bonnet.
Xuanya,
Congratulations on your new acquisition. As you may know in 1998 Rolls-Royce and Bentley split with BMW licensing the R-R name and VW acquiring the factory in Crewe and building Bentleys. In 2003, BMW completed a new factory for R-R in Goodwood on Lord March's (now the Duke of Richmond) holding. Any of the cars after 2003 are often referred to as "Goodwood" Rolls-Royces. The current authorized dealers have almost no connection to the legacy company. Honestly, many of the mechanics working on cars in dealerships now weren't born when your car was made. They are not trained on the older cars and often lack the tools to work on them (particularly some quirky diagnostic tools). There are exceptions. Bentley Zionsville (IN) and Steve Foley R-R (suburban Chicago) are still servicing the older cars. I have my modern (older) cars serviced at Foley and they have been candid, when their mechanic retires they will cease to service these cars. You may also want to know (perhaps do already) that your series of car is often referred to as an SZ car, to distinguish it from the earlier SY (Silver Shadow and related) platform.
That's TREMENDOUDS historical info. Ironically, the Parts Manager of s prestigious New York area authorized Rolls-Royce dealer did not know the informatin you just provided. I will share it with him.
So as not to publicly disparage the individual, I would share that with you privately under separate cover. By the way, how does one personalize their posts with their vehicle models as you have in yours?
Click on your profile picture (currently a green X) in the upper right of your screen. Select 'Account Settings'. On the left side choose 'Signature'. Enter your car details there.
Depending on your location, there are new car dealers that will not touch the car, however there are also several independent that are highly recommended.
The Goodwood split came with the introduction of the New Phantom (now not so new, as it's had multiple generations).
When BMW took ownership of Rolls-Royce, and VW of Bentley, responsibility for all "Heritage Vehicles" (those produced prior to the introduction of the Goodwood Phantom) was assigned to Bentley, not Rolls-Royce, for both marques.
Today, and only if you are very lucky to find a Bentley dealer that has some very "old timers" in the repair shop, you go to Bentley for service on a Rolls-Royce of your vintage. Bentley High Point in NC still had several competent mechanics for the older cars up through about 5 years ago, though who knows who's retired since then.
One's best bet is to turn to third party service facilities that specialize in British cars, and specifically Rolls-Royce and Bentley motorcars. There are a lot of them, listed by state, in the RR & Bentley Parts, Repair, Restoration & Other Resources Compilation. Some states are, of course, without any, and the two coasts have more than the middle of the United States does, but as has been noted, there are some there.
By the way, you can use the 800 number listed in the above reference for Bentley Motors to get an abbreviated version of the build sheet for your car. It will not be nearly as detailed as the original build sheets that you can source from the RREC would be, and info on doing that is in "the compilation," too.
