I just started driving my 79 shadow again and remembered an issue I have always had. When the lights are on the headlight switch gets very hot. Is this common? What needs to be done to repair it. I have a burnt out hulk of a Rolls that had a dash fire. I don't want to see the same thing with my Shad2
The dash lights come on when the ignition is on also.

Sounds like too much electrical resistance in the switch. Perhaps disassemble and rebuild. Another option would be to remove the switch and spray on some Caig Labs cleaner and then MCL. Also, check the grounding, perhaps you have a bad ground within the circuit.

Sounds as though th eswitch contacts are worn .

The switch box needs to be removed and disassembled to reach the contacts. There are about 10 sets in all, so make sure you find the right ones! (You can normally see burning on the tips or bluing where it's been overheated.
