My Shadow II has developed a nasty exhaust leak. Upon examination, it appears that the left side exhaust manifold has moved and one of the bolts has completely fallen out. I’ve been told this is very common on Shadow II’s.

I’m definitely not happy about this repair. Anyone have any advice before I get started?

It's recommended that the manifold bolt tightness should be checked annually while the engine is cold.

The bolts are tightened to a low torque to allow expansion of the exhaust manifold. It undergoes expansion and contraction due to the amount of heat and sudden cooling and therefore elongated holes are designed for that. If the fasteners are over-tightened, the result will be cracking of the cast iron. A long term solution is to mill the exhaust flange for straightness, install new seals and replace any studs that may be missing or decayed.
