Most of the stories I hear of blown head gaskets on pre-BMW Bentleys seem to relate to the Turbo R.

Can anyone tell me if the Brooklands model was much affected?

Head gasket failure can happen in any car, with turbo vehicles there is a tendency to "put your foot down" before the block and heads warm up together> another cause was gasket failure due to the gaskets themselves. The higher boost turbos added more stress to the heads/gaskets. Unfortunately when buying a used car we do not know the previous owners driving habits so like anything in life it's a gamble. It can be expensive due to the labor involved.

I've had a head gasket failure on my car. It's not the end of the world - expensive to fix, but not horrendous (provided you realise it's blown and don't overheat the engine. If you don't realise, and badly overheat it, ultimately the engine can be scrap).

Once it's done, then should be solved - the failure is apparently down to the gasket quality in the mid 90's.

Personally, I would be more concerned about other areas - many cars on the market are in need of substantial suspension and brake work and/or hydraulic work to bring them back to factory spec.
