Dear Members,

First of all I do to apologize for my english, I was born in Vienna so this is my second language.

I would like to buy an Azure but the car I found is very far from me.
The owner is an elderly gentleman who lives very far from every Bentley specialists I found online.
The only thing I could do is to order a mobile inspection from a mechanic although the guy is not a Bentley expert.
He said the car is in good shape, he checked literally everything he could, inside, outside, underneath, run a computer test, took a test drive, and sent hundreds of photos.

I was wondering if I could share the photos with someone who knows a bit more about these cars than I or him.
I sent a few emails to Bentley specalist but I haven't received any answer unfortunately.

I have been planning to buy an Azure for a while so I know what needs to be checked.
I have lots of photos about the hydraulic top hoses, head gasket, suspension etc.

But I'm not an expert so if anyone could help me with this I would really appreciate that. :)

Thanks very much in advance.

Pete,

Welcome.
You may want to let us know where you and the Azure are located?
I would post pictures here with questions or concerns.

I would make sure there is a very knowledgeable RR/B tech that you can bring the car to, unless you are prepared and versed in RR repair.
Thye local shop will not be familiar with this car.

Be prepared to spend 20K in US dollars on the top hoses and rams if they have not been replaced yet. If the outer cover on any of the hoses is peeling off then they could fail at any time. I had an Azure in the shop early in the summer with four leaking rams and one blown hose. I replaced the hose and rebuilt those four rams but the rest of the hoses are deteriorating and are due for replacement. The car is coming back in October to have the rest of the rams rebuilt and all the hoses replaced. As I'm sure you're read this is a very big and expensive job. Where in the UK are you located? You can email photos to me offline and I will comment on them.

I'll simply say that I'd spend the money to go and see the vehicle "in the flesh" if you are really serious about buying it. At least if you are planning to do a lot of the work yourself and know what you need to look for.

Otherwise, it's well worth the money to hire a Bentley expert who's willing to travel for pre-purchase inspections and have them do so.

As Jim Walters has already indicated, the amount of money one can throw at these cars based on deferred maintenance or even just doing what needs to be done because various bits have reached the end of their service lives is very significant.

You will consider it money well spent if you avoid a money pit, or if the result is peace of mind that the car is in good shape based on expert opinion.

Hello Kevic-ct,

Thank you for your reply.
The car is located in North Carolina while I'm based in London (UK).
Here are some photos from underneath and about the engine bay.

Hi Guyslp,

I'm in England while the car is located in North Carolina. I'm unable to travel there thanks for Covid restrictions.
The cheapest car in the EU (which is obviously not perfect either) is advertised for $55k while nice examples with good history start around 70.
I could by this car for significantly less.
I traveled to France, Germany and Switzerland during the summer to view 5 cars in person.
I think this one is in much better condition than any of those.

Thanks Jim.
The hoses were replaced a few years ago.
I have just sent a PM for you.

Kremer,

Well, I actually wasn't presuming that this amount of distance was involved! Not to mention, I took temporary leave of my senses and left Covid-19 completely out of the equation. Even though there are east coast techs who might, under normal circumstances, travel for a pre-purchase inspection, that would be limited now.

That being said, depending on exactly where, the folks at Bentley High Point may very well know this car or even have been responsible for servicing it. It would be worth giving them a call:

Bentley High Point North Carolina and South Carolina Bentley Dealer | New and Used Bentley Motor Cars | Bentley High Point

High Point, NC 27262
Phone: (336) 884-1100
FAX: (336) 889-5605
e-mail: [email protected] Mel Robertson is their Crewe Era person

Please do let us know how this pursuit turns out. I'd also love to know if the folks at Bentley High Point know this car. To be honest, I'll be shocked if they don't, as they've been the Bentley (and, formerly, Rolls-Royce) dealer in the Carolinas region "forever."

My Wraith II, which I'm only the second owner of, was sold by them when they were still known as Transco, and its original home was in Richmond, VA.
