94 Brooklands gearbox issue

Hi, can anyone help with an intermittent gear selection issue, occasionally the car will get stuck in drive, you can't select reverse or park, if you switch off the vehicle won't start as its stuck in drive, managed to get it home twice now, left until next morning, started it and gear selection is back to normal.
Any pointers to investigate the fault please.
