Hi All,

What are your thoughts on fitting the above tyre size to my 1984 'Spirit?

I know they are not the original size (235/70R15), but the difference in diameter is about 3%. Surely not enough to notice.

There's a much better range of tyres available in 75 profile. However, most of them are 4x4 tyres. I would imagine that would also be OK?

I think I would far rather fit decent quality tyres of this size than fit less good tyres of 70 profile.

I'm thinking of getting these:

I compare them with these:

The only perceived disadvantage of the Michelins is that they are not whitewall and I rather like my car with its whitewalls!

Thoughts?

Here's one of my favorite tire calculators.
It will be out more the 3%. The car will be almost sitting an inch taller too, may look really odd.
The tire calculator will tell that's it's dangerous, but I wouldn't pay too much attention to that.

A 225/75 would be better to keep your speedometer closer to the 235/70 size, but certainly more narrow.

Thanks Jeff, Thanks Chris,

In many ways I'd rather not fit the Avons because I have heard that they are pretty poor overall and expensive at that. I don't believe they are good value for money, which is why I am investigating alternatives.

Jeff - is 1/2 inch taller a problem? Do you think that would really look strange?

I'd rather go slightly larger diameter than smaller. More relaxed cruising?

I don't think I'd notice 3% either way?

I strongly recommend to use original 235/70R15, I use for some time already galaxy vitour R even with original white line1, which you can buy for very fair price.
I am very pleased by them

Thanks guys! I have ordered 4 Galaxy 235/70R15 from Longstone Tyres:

https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/235-70hr15-galaxy-whitewall.html

Looking forward to getting them fitted! Should be done next Thursday :)

p.s. I sold a load of car parts to pay for these - I specialise in the Renault 5 Gordini Turbo and had someone visit me yesterday for some parts. The guy drove me nuts! He asked me to quote on loads of parts that he didn't want to spend the money on. Then he haggled me down on individual parts. Then grouped them together and then tried to haggle on the combination of multiple parts. So he was trying to get me to lose out twice! I'm an intelligent guy so can spot this but it left me with a bad taste. In the end I couldn't be bothered quoting him on any more parts. I was so fed up!

Remember as well that there definitely do exist individuals that you do not want as customers.

Having been in both retail and technical support for individuals I can say, without any hesitation, the customer is not always right and there are a few you're very glad to see the last of.

Indeed!

New tyres being fitted right now!

Front tyres were from 2001. Hmm... 17 years old.

Rears are new in comparison - 2005!
