I have a 2010 Bentley Brooklands Coupe (one of only 550 produced at Crewe) and I'm looking for an affordable diagnostics unit to read and ideally reset fault codes. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Depending on the codes many are proprietary and can only be read at Bentley, especially 2nd layer codes with modules.

The engine warning light is general and covers many problems. Have it sorted out properly at the dealer and take care of your investment. There are no short cuts on this one.

My Autel DS708 scanner lists Bentley as one of the models that it can access for propitiatory systems. While it's not able to get into the earlier car systems from the 90's era cars prior to the VW ownership. I suspect that it would have no problems with any of the cars released during the VW/BMW era.

The DS708 is discontinued, the DS808 replaced it. You can also try Launch X431 scanners or Snapon.

Don't get me wrong. I'm certainly not intending to avoid the dealer. I like to be forewarned before the visit and know if it is a fault where I should not be driving until it's sorted. Call it curiosity and part of the learning curve of owning such a piece of beautiful British engineering and workmanship.

Advice: Next purchase Always have the vehicle sale subject to a pre-purchase inspection with the cost deducted or split 50/50. This is informative for both parties. No different than buying a house especially with a high ticket auto with layers of electronics. Now you are left hunting codes and possible uncovering many dollars in work.

Exceptional car, congratulations.
In any case, if the cooling sytem for engine and bi turbo was drained 3 years ago or more, you should definitely have both circuit drain.
A Bentley specialist should do it, draining the intercooler mono turbo is not easy and air is a dnager ofr those engine.
Draining the bi turbo is more specific and Bentley has a special procedure and coolant.

If the engine and bi turbo are not drained and some air remain, you may create serious dammages to the turbo and /or the engine.

It has a complete and fully documented up to date service history by the main Bentley dealer and has 12,000klm on the clock. No expense has been spared.

A car can be fine one day and the next day somethings breaks...that's the way life is. Bring it to the Bentley dealer to get sorted.

And check on the invoice you have if clearly stated that engine coolant and twin turbo coolant was replaced max 3 years ago.
This is 2 different circuits, very often the turbo / twin turbo intercooler crcuit is not done because not easy and could be problematic.

If you do not have the proove it has been done, my best advice is to have it done.
We will have warned you our best....

Many issuer starts very simply, because of a lack of maintenance, they grew up in silence, and one day the problem is mature and could ruin the engine.
