The selector moves through all gears, but nothing engages so I can't move.
It's been temperamental for the last year, sometimes taking 5 mins to engage a gear and at other times staying in the previous gear selected even though the lever has been moved. When it's running it drives beautifully, so no apparent mechanical issues. Is it electronic, and what do I check out?
Thanks
Chris

When you moive the shift in the car to change gear, in fact an egine is doing it in the gear box for you, so it's very easy to move the shifter.
Depending on your mechanic knowledge, you could look for the ECU or actuator. But ECU is electronic, as far as I remember under the steering, and actuator is with trnasmission under the car.
These are genral explanations.

What Turbly describes looks more like an actuator issue, microswitch, oxydation, water inside...
It needs to be taken out of the car, open and clean and check by a specialist.

You could also check with a scan if there are some default registered.

Edito : I thought you had a 92 Turbo R, but see on another topic you have a 86 Spirit .
You should have said that in advance , your system is different.
That would have been more simple for all of us.
