Negative battery earth strap

Hello
I need to replace the battery earth cable which runs from the negative terminal post on the battery to the body of the car
Does anyone know the correct thickness and ampage for the cable

Thanks Alex

You can go 1/0 or 2/0 cable. It is less than 12" in length. I would spend the money and have a custom crimped and lugged cable like one of these.

Hello Wraithman

Nice to hear from you ,it's been a while since I was on here

I think the US cable size is 10mm uk

Yes I intend to buy a ready made cable ,They are very reasonably priced on eBay

My only concern was mm2 and amp

This one is 16mm2 ( cross sectional) 110 amp rated

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12-300mm-...L/322462901007

would this suitable ?

Thanks Alec

Hi Alec, I would go to the next larger size. Think of cable like pipes and flow of electrons. Even though it's the neg leg, most of the draw will be thru the positive side, upgrading the neg side will not hurt.

I used 2/0 for my car amps power distribution blocks.

Thanks again

Just found another conversion site I believe your 2/0 gauge is 35mm2 about 7mm diameter

Or
1/0 gauge 42mm2 about 7.4 diameter

Will search for 35mm2 cable which I believe is 240 amp rating

Thank you kindly

Alec

I agree with Wraithman. This is an opportunity to add reliability to your car by oversizing the wire at a minimal cost.

This is also a great time to fit an isolator switch, if one is not already fitted. Whenever I put my Rolls in the garage I flick the power off - great insurance against fires on a car with 45 year old wiring.

Hello Geoff

Mine hasn't got a kill switch I normally undo the butterfly bolt on the battery earth cable at night

I will look into the ideal of an isolator switch good ideal

Thanks Alec
