The increase from a 185HP to 400HP engine power of later cars does seem a logical reason for failures especially as so many later cars have had far greater numbers of issues.

Chances are that those gaskets they have are the same ones that originally failed. (new old stock)
The asbestos/composite/metal gaskets were never meant to withstand the combustions pressures of a boosted engine.
