I am new too! 1971 Corniche and 1934 Phantom II

Dear all

I have recently taken into my care and love a 1971 Corniche and am (probably tomorrow) taking delivery of a 1934 Phantom II. Daunting.

Both needed some attention, which both have received, and I have been driving the Corniche quite a bit and she drives very nicely.

I already have some questions, and will no doubt have many more, but I assume I first need to be let into the club before I start posting.

My biggest challenge is that I am not equipped in the skills department to do much work on the cars myself - I am happy to do a lot of research and to learn as much as I can, but the knowledge tends to end up more academic than practical.

I may end up spending much time here - another forum helped me immensely to get to know a Series One Jaguar E Type, especially at the beginning, which guided me along the right paths in dealing with the technicians and helped me drive her almost 200 miles per most weekends.

Hope this is an enjoyable and educative space.

Hi Vonkie, Welcome aboard!

Still have the E Type? Long time Jaguar enthusiast and collector. I owned a pristine silver 1970 SII Coupe (15k mi), 1968 S 1.5 Roadster. and a 1974 SIII V-12 Roadster along with a fully restored 1959 MK1 2.4L

Where located? I reside in NYC suburbs.

Welcome to the forum Vonkie. You can post any technical questions in the technical section and hopefully you will get good help.

Hi Wraithman

Thanks!

Yes I still have the E Type. Since I took delivery in October 2017 I have driven her close on 11,000 miles. I am in Johannesburg area, South Africa. One plus is we have a climate that is even better than in California (warmer winters, cooler summers). So one can drive 365 days a year, and it's quite dry too. Your Jaguars are all listed in the past tense - have you offloaded them all?

Thanks Shadow

I see the forum timestamp is USA - is it mainly an American forum?

Does one ask technical Qs in a general technical forum, or in the forum of the category of one's RR?

Are there subforums for the models? Pre-1965 is a helluva broad section, especially when it comes to a 40/50 HP 1934 car! Browsing the forums (admittedly not too thoroughly yet) does not suggest a clear sub-categorisation narrowing down the ranges a bit more.

Do people know of useful forums (fora) specifically dedicated to 40/50 HP RRs? Less likely to need a specialist forum for the Corniche, but if there is one for that series (SS, Bentley T, Corniche, etc), that would also help.

Given that I already have 10 driving reports for the Corniche, I've built up some questions on that front.

The pre-65 technical area covers all older models. There's also another enthusiasts site "RR Forums Australia" where the technical section headings are slightly more specific to model. The Australian site also has some useful workshop manuals that you can download free of charge. Many RR enthusiasts are members of both these forums. I don't think time zone matters too much as the members are from all over the world and post at their convenience so sometimes you might receive an immediate response and other times a number of hours may elapse between contacts. If someone can help they will normally respond when they see a communication relevant to their area of knowledge or experience. Then there's the RR Owner's Club which charges a fee for membership and offers technical advice too.

Thanks Shadow - I’ll learn no doubt. I see I can set my timezone, which I have now done, and a friendly admin even edited my brainfart.

Driving weekend ahead - tomorrow breakfast trip E Type (alone) about 100 miles return, Sunday breakfast trip Corniche (top down) with father in law (about 70 miles return) and Sunday lunch trip with my mom in the Phantom (probably about 30 miles return). It will be a lot more relaxing practising getting the hang of the Phantom gears on a Sunday than in traffic on a Thursday.
