Central Locking 1996 Continental R

So I have working door and boot lid locks - that is to say, when the key is inserted to lock or unlock, the actuator can be heard to operate, so I know the localised operation of the locks is OK - but there is no central locking.

The car is completely unmodified and has the original remote key fob and the remote locking control module is located behind the left hand trim panel in the boot - if the battery is disconnected and then re-connected, the module can he heard to click several times, which I believe it should do.

I know there is a second central locking/alarm control module behind the centre console too.

Anyone got any thoughts?

(One strange thing - when I open or close the doors on my Jeep Commander with the Jeep's remote fob, I can hear the control module in the boot (trunk) clicking in the Bentley!!)

Hi I have the same problem on my 1997 Turbo R,it will neither lock or unlock using the remote when connect the battery the hazards all come on until I insert the key into the ignition switch the central locking works off the door swiches Ok but puts up a Alarm Occurrred message when I drive away,i am told that the sensor is located behind the rear parcel shelf trim however the Alarm/CDU unit is behind the dash,These remote Keyfobs are known to be notorious for failing I had rebuilt and programmed for over £200 and it only lasted a handful of times and i was told by the people who did the work it was only warranted for 6 months,I wonder if it is cheaper to have an after market system fitted perhaps it will be cheaper and more reliable? regards Ernie

You may have a different alarm and immobiliser system in your car, I think they changed them not long after my car was built - I don't ever get hazards coming on after battery re-connected.

It may well be easier to have an aftermarket one fitted - but for me, I'm an obsessive about originality so I will either continue to try to fix it, or live without a remote key fob.

If you go down the aftermarket route, just make sure you get the right person to do it!

The central locking is my main issue as it's very annoying getting in, starting the engine and then discover the passenger can't get in because the door is locked. But I am sure this will get sorted. I think I am going to have to go behind the centre console to check the ECU.

Has your car been left out in the rain? Moisture in the key hole switch can be a problem.

Owning a Bentley is like having a mistress, It cost you but oh what fun.

I have a 1998 and noticed that when other people lock or unlock their cars sometimes the alarm system will beep once on mine. I would check all the fuses. When I first got my car the interior light fuse messed with the alarm

Ive the same issue on my 98 Brooklands, (and I only have one remote) ive been told by a Specialist that the alarm ecu can lose its connection to the remotes, this can be re programmed not sure how, he said he uses a specialist and ive elected to remove mine, send it off, get a new spare fob as I only have one, and they will then programmed both to the ecu.I have the specialist details but not sure if we are allowed to post them on here so wont for now but if im allowed and you need them let me know.

I decided this as I already have all the dash off for refinishing so it is easy (I hope )

Let me know what you think or if you have better ideas!

Hi Micheal if you read my earlier post on this subject you will find I went down this road only to find that the whole system remains very unreliable the problem is that as you spend good money trying to have the remotes and ECU s reprogrammed they only last a short while mine was about 10 useages and the company who does this work only gives a 6 months warranty, i have been told by a local RR /Bentley specialist that the entire CDL /Alarm system is very prone to failure and problems ,that is why I am considering having a after market system fitted to my Turbo R I would of course only trust this to an approved installer that way you get 2 remotes plus the backup to order replacements.Hope this helps
