It should indeed!! You do have to press quite 'firmly' to get it to operate in the older 3 speed whereas my 4 speed is far too easy to initiate 'kickdown' I think it's all in how the cable (?) is adjusted... it is on 'lesser' cars.
Check continuity between black/pink and yellow/purple wires on the TPS with full throttle, should be .5 ohms. If it tests OK the issue will be in the wiring or the detent solenoid inside the transmission. Info is in the workshop manual.
