81 Spirit Power locks

on my silver spirit the power locks will unlock but they will not lock although you can hear the relays clicking "faint clicking sound" when the button is pressed but they do not lock I also noticed they when they unlock the interior lamps slightly dim but when locking they stay the same any ideas

I have the same problem on my 1982 Silver Spur. I found what I have to do to lock the doors is lock the front passengers door plunger and this will lock all the doors except the drivers door. Then all I do is open drivers door, lock it, get out and close the door with the door release button depressed. Would be better to be able to just lock it from the drivers door but the central locking is so complicated with all the solenoids, linkages and micro switches and I have no idea where to start.

Re

I still have not fixed mine everytime I go to thr trouble to take off one door Panel I look and say oh just forget it far to complicated fOr me lucky for you your passenger door locks everything even my trunk will not lock without the key I do know that the lock and unlocking are completely separate from each other you problem sounds like a bad micro switch in your drivers door not sure if you have checked it you probably have but I will tell you how usually when one will lock them all the micro switch is bad in the faulty door my problem I believe is a ground issue so sad is was not a micro switch because I have plenty spares anyway all you do is

1 "pull" on that carpet plate on the. Bottom of the door and the clips will release

2 you will see to screws on each side of the leather trim on each side of the door remember the door panel is 3 pieces only 2 need to be removed remove the 2 screws and unsnap the leather trim

3 You will see Part of the locking system and 2 microswitch you can test the microswitch by unplugging the 2 wires from the microswitch and connecting them together with a small piece of wire if the doors lock when they connect then you found your prOblem

You probably know what the microswitches look like since they are thought the car but if not they are a very small black box with a red button 2 of them one for the locking and one for the unlocking are located directly below the door lock plunger

This is the most common and easiest fix for the problem you are have sadly mine is a deeper issue.

Also I am not sure if you have had your door panels off before but please be careful when removing and please check for screws on the second panel I may have forgotten one but I doubt it let me know how it goes.

door locks

Hope this helps, On my 91 solver spirit, door would unlock but not lock.
Looked up the wiring and found there were seperate relays one for opening and one for closing, they can be found if you remove the cover under the steering wheel, if you check out the australian tech website there is info on the location of the relays, from memory there are a few lined up together, probably easiest is either to pull each relay until you get a no lock and then either the relay to right or left should be your problem relayjust swapped it for working relay to verify problem ordered one for £20 from flying spares so pretty happy with result, previously I had convinced myself that all of the door solenoids were shot

Good Luck

I am trying to fit an alarm to my silver shadow, I can get it to lock from using the wires on the block in kick panel on drivers side, the problem is when I disarm the system I see an attempt and a click to unlock but all doors remain locked, I was searching for relays as I think I should use those to select open/close and it may solve issue but cant see them, do you know where I should find them? its a 1970 MKI
cheers in advance

Hi All
I discovered 2 extra relays fitted in the back of my car fitted by previous alarm fitter.
Now I know why.
You could easy fit a couple of relays to boost the current , don't know why the originals won't do it ,Brian insists that all the mechanisms need lubricating he could well be right.
Hope that helps
Mike

extra relays might be way to go if I cannot locate originals, presumably under the dashboard somewhere, more contortion work to get good look.
I have had all the actuators out cleaned and lubricated and tested and all working 100% (almost, passenger plunger will stick occasionally) I also removed cleaned and lubed locks and lubed all lock rods pivot point plastic bushes.

side note : I just got through fitting replacement door seals all round, all the wind noise has gone, much quieter drive now.

I got an fitted new CR2032 batteries for remotes and that made a difference, the system can detect low remote battery signal and gives off confusing signals to let you know they need replacing, I thought I must have done something wrong in wire connections? after arming system I got one flash of indicators and 1 beep (all good) but like 3 seconds later the system would on its on go back into dis-arm mode, this confused me until I remembered it is a PKE (keyless entry) which means I can get out of the car walk away about a car length the system would sense remote out of range and automatically arm itself, when I walk back toward the car it would dis-arm for convenience.
what I forgot was I was at the drivers door testing lock unlock so although it would arm it immediately sensed the remote proximity and dis-armed.
getting harder to concentrate as I get older I guess, felt like a proper Muppet when the penny dropped, no comments guys.

I am busy on DS420 today so will get back to RR when relays I ordered arrive (E-Bay miles cheaper than local auto shops) at least until Australian government introduce GST for online purchases

Spent 3hrs yesterday under and around dash, no success did not find main relays which trigger locks, getting pretty frustrated now, took some pics and went to my RR specialist, nice guy Neil McLean in Perth, he told me it would be tricky as wiring on these systems feeds back through other systems and because someone has made a bit of a dogs dinner of the wiring over the years it could take some time to figure out.
he said he has fitted keyless entry before on one but couldn't recall exactly what he did, anyway I have exhausted my efforts and he has it next week for some underneath work so I asked him to take a look at the electrics, after having two spinal fusions over the years I am hurting being twisted around under dash so I surrender.
I will be there to assist him and will take pics and detail what they do so I can report back for others thinking of doing this conversion, I must be getting old never had to hand over a job in past.
cheers

Hi Wayne
Don't be too down about the car, I'm sure they made the wiring up as they went along lol, the relays could be anywhere, butI'm suprised there dosen't seem to be a wiring diagram anywhere that includes the central locking. Also if you are following someone elses attempts that makes it 10x's more difficult.
If I were there I would jump at the chance to do it for you but it's difficult doing a job like that "remote" if you like, sorry I couldn't help you more.
Let us know how you get on!
Best wishes
Mike
